Our Story
So, how did this 'Great British Indian Restaurant Revival' in Australia come about? The answer is a mixture of reasons ranging from nostalgia to the ongoing complaint of "they just don't taste like curries back home". Before you start thinking 'is that a whinge I hear', there are thousands of True Blue Aussies who also fell in love with the British Indian Curry on their travels. And, they miss them too.
Hence, the reason why British Chef David Hills called time and went about enlisting the assistance of an Indian Food Researcher, mysteriously known as "RRJ", and British Indian Chef Consultant; Ahmed Gupta to engage in a 2 year search for the true secrets of British Indian Cuisine. David, also an Indian Food Specialist, consults with 2 British Indian Restaurants in the UK. To what end? We now have the recipes, the gravies and the most necessary secrets to make truly missed, British Indian Restaurant Food.
The First Indian Restaurant in The Western World
The splendid Hindoostane Coffee House (HCH), opened by Sake Dean Mahomed in George Street, London, in 1810 was the first official Indian Restaurant in Britain and the World. Besides tobacco and spice sales, the HCH also served Indian Food to its Patrons.
Restaurateur Mahomed was an extraordinary character: the son of an official of the British East India Company but adopted at an early age by an Anglo-Irish army officer. He served in the army of the East India Company as a surgeon, and later emigrated to County Cork where he converted to Anglicanism and eloped with a pretty Irish girl named Jane Daly. read more
Not long after arriving in London, S D Mahomed opened the Hindoostane Coffee House in 1810. He passed away in 1851.
